Economy Finance breakfast with Isabelle Braun-Lemaire, Director General of Customs and Excise (DGDDI),

How does Customs work?

How does Customs work?

Alongside the DGFIP, the Treasury Department and the Budget Department, the Customs Department is one of the flagship entities of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance. It plays an eminent role in tax collection (customs duties, import VAT, tobacco and alcohol taxes), in supporting economic activity, and in suppressing fraud and drug trafficking.

How does this key department of the Ministry of Finance function? How is it organized, who are its agents, how many are there, what is their training, what powers do they have? What varied missions is it responsible for? How has it evolved over the past forty years?

On Friday April 1, Isabelle Braun-Lemaire, head of the Customs Department, will be on hand to explain all the facets of her important responsibilities, and to answer questions from anyone interested in finding out more about the workings of this essential government tool.

Isabelle Braun-Lemaire, a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and ENSAE, and Inspector General of INSEE, has been head of the DGDDI for the past two and a half years. Prior to this, she was Secretary General of the French Ministries of Economy and Finance, following a position as HRD for the Ministries. She began her career at the INSEE General Directorate, then at the General Tax Directorate, before holding various other ministerial positions.
