GANs and Deepfakes
Invitation to an online conference on Ekimetrics
ENSAE Alumni is pleased to invite you to an interactive videoconference entitled:
GANs and Deepfakes
In May 2019, Facebook came under fire, as the social network let circulate a distorted video of US Democrat Nancy Pelosi in which she appears drunk: the video went viral, was seen by over 2 million people in two days and allowed Donald Trump to discredit her again again - Facebook does not consider itself a guarantor or judge of the veracity of videos, advocates freedom of expression and announces that it will not delete any deepfake. In June 2019, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, is featured in a distorted video in which his character announces thathe's ready to use the billions of data stolen from citizens to control the future, and that he owes it all to "Spectre". In January 2020, Facebook issued a statement banning deepfakes.
Deepfakes now appear to be a propaganda tool whose impact on society is as yet uncontrolled.
What are GANs - Generative Adversarial Networks - the algorithms behind the most sophisticated deepfakes? How do they work? Are they only designed to produce deepfakes, or do they have beneficial applications for society?
We'll take a look at how they work, explore their areas of application for text, image, sound and video generation, and look at some clues for detecting deepfakes.
