Economy Finance breakfast with Frédéric GILLI

Le Grand Débat: what's in it for us?

Following the "gilets jaunes" movement and on the initiative of President Macron, the French government launched at the very beginning of 2019 the organization of the " Grand Débat", intended to let the voice of the people be freely expressed, at all its sociological, demographic and geographical levels. As this month of April draws to a close, this vast popular consultation, personally embodied by Emmanuel Macron during multiple meetings with local elected officials, and concretized by thousands of citizens' forums and notebooks of grievances deposited in town halls, where are we? What is the outcome of the many demands made by the French, in the face of a society and political system that many consider unsatisfactory, unfair and unequal? In the wake of all these consultations, will we quickly see any key measures taken to meet the expectations of our fellow citizens?

Commissioned in advance of this "Grand Débat", Frédéric Gilli has been meeting hundreds of citizens of both sexes, all over the country, since early 2019: schoolchildren, high-school students, retirees, craftsmen, executives, teachers, management consultants, farmers, the unemployed, civil servants, company directors... In the light of this wide-ranging consultation, what might the outcome be? Have we opened Pandora's box to the most unrealistic demands? Is this just a form of window-dressing to try and calm down the various demands? Or, on the contrary, are we going to draw from it the key measures capable of changing people's lives and our social organization? And what lessons can we draw from this historic phase in terms of our approach to reforming the country?

An alumnus of ENSAE (class of 2000), with a doctorate in economics and a post-graduate diploma (DEA) in geography, Frédéric is a professor at the "Sciences-Po" urban school and a partner in the "Grand Public" agency. On April 19, Frédéric Gilli will give us an in-depth presentation of the experience and conclusions of his mission as part of the "Grand Débat".
