The new mega-companies of the early ^21st century - GAFAM for the Americans and BATX for the Chinese - are based on gigantic digital platforms.A number of more traditional, Giant-like companies, such as Walmart, Ikea and Airbus, are widening the gap between themselves and the rest of the pack, by every criterion (productivity, innovation, market share, profits...). But their hyper-power, based to a very large extent on their day-to-day knowledge of their customers' personalized data, as well as on their monopoly power, which makes individual consumers more dependent on them than ever before, tends to undermine democracies through their enormous general power over grassroots citizens. However, the States have not said their last word, as we can see from the recent creation of a minimum global tax of 15% on their worldwide profits. What will be the outcome of the clash between Titans, Giants and Olympian Gods (i.e. the great modern States)? This is the theme of François Lévêque's latest book, "Les entreprises hyperpuissantes - Géants et Titans, la fin du modèle global?"(ed. Odile Jacob, April 2021), whose conclusions he will share with us on Friday June 25 at Ladurée.

François Lévêque holds a doctorate in economics and is a graduate of Agro. François Lévêque is Professor of Economics at the Ecole des Mines de Paris, where he teaches industrial economics and energy economics. He has published numerous books and academic articles in these fields. After teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, he founded one of the very first consultancies specializing in antitrust issues. He regularly collaborates with the OECD and the European Commission. He regularly publishes popular economic articles, in particular in The Conversation France.
