Russia/Ukraine conflict: is a peaceful solution still possible?

Russia/Ukraine conflict: is a peaceful solution still possible?

We are now just over a hundred days away from Russia's attack on Ukraine. This conflict was unexpected, given that we in Europe have been used to living in a peaceful world since 1945, with the exception of NATO's 1999 war against Serbia. In 2004, Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" - largely financed by private American institutions - aimed to extend Western control ever further eastwards, and was followed in 2014 by the Maastricht uprising.Maïdan revolt, combined with the conflict in Donbass and Russia's annexation of Crimea, which in early 2022 led to a global military clash between Russia and its former ally in Kiev. Today, it's war, and even if human losses remain relatively limited, it's not clear how far this conflict will take us. Is there still a reasonable, peaceful way out of this outbreak of war? Doesn't the radical choice made by the Western camp (United States and Western Europe) in favor of Ukraine, with the supply of hundreds of billions of dollars worth of sophisticated weaponry transferred via Poland, run the risk of constituting theWouldn't this be the spark of World War3, given that Russian and American nuclear missiles are capable of annihilating the entire globe in a matter of hours? Could neutral parties such as China, India, Israel, Turkey, the African Union or Brazil play a mediating role before the whole thing goes up in flames?

Renaud Girard, one of the world's leading experts on geopolitics, will be on hand on June 24 to share his convictions and anticipations about this crucial phase in our history.

Born in New York in 1955, a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure (rue d'Ulm) and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, Renaud Girard has been a war correspondent for the "Figaro" since 1984. He has covered practically all the conflicts of the last 35 years (Afghanistan, Bosnia, Cambodia, Colombia, Croatia, Gaza, Haiti, Iraq, Kosovo, Libya, Rwanda, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine...). This has enabled him to analyze all the world's major crises, whether diplomatic, economic or financial. Since 2013, Renaud Girard has been writing the international column for Le Figaro every Tuesday. A regular contributor to the press, radio and television, he advocates a return to realism in foreign policy. In 2014, he was awarded the Grand Prix de la Presse Internationale for lifetime achievement. He is the author of numerous books on geopolitics, including "Le Monde en guerre, 50 clefs pour le comprendre" ("Carnets Nord, 2016") and "Quelle diplomatie pour la France?"(éd. Poche 2017, 9€), which he will kindly sign for you on June 24, on presentation of the book.
