DATA and AI breakfast with Matthieu Lerasle
The glorious uncertainty of sport, or is might makes right? Some fundamental limits.
ENSAE Alumni is pleased to invite you to its next DATA and AI breakfast-debate.
The glorious uncertainty of sport, or is might makes right? Some fundamental limits.
Some sports, such as soccer, have a relatively high degree of randomness: a small team can spring a surprise in one match. But what happens in a championship with a large number of matches? Can a small team come out on top against the odds? Or does a large number of matches necessarily favor the best teams?
Sports fans know that surprises happen, even in season-long championships. But how can we formalize these situations? What kind of predictions can be made? What are the theoretical findings on the subject?
In addition to providing food for thought on the Canal Football Club, this work could be of interest not only to betting professionals, but also to competition organizers and video game designers... and why not consider applications in finance or insurance to model rare events?
For those who would like an overview of the subject, you can preview this article from the CNRS journal, which discusses this work:
An alumnus of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, Matthieu Lerasle holds a doctorate in mathematics (INSA Toulouse) and the Habilitation à diriger des recherches.Matthieu Lerasle was a research fellow at CNRS before becoming professor of statistics at ENSAE, and is also a lecturer at Ecole Polytechnique.
His research interests include statistical learning, robust statistics and high-dimensional statistics.
